Take that, Mayans! We’re still here.
It feels good. This time last year, I would not have been so sure we would be here. That feeling had nothing to do with the Mayans.
We had just come off of one of the worst stretches of business since we started, back in 2006. By the time it turned around in February of this year we had lost almost 50 percent of our clients and our first employee had quit to go work for a competitor after almost two years with us.
In your heart you know that most setbacks are temporary. All businesses have them. Most businesses bounce back. Still, in late December I was thinking the end was near. There didn’t seem to be any way to stop the bleeding and the worst part was; I wasn’t sure what was wrong or how to fix it. The majority of the client loss was due to either the economy or clients moving out of our service area and no matter how heavily I advertised and social-media-ized (there I go again, making up new words), new clients were not beating down the door.
So we took some steps to set ourselves apart; we got our mobile website up and running, we developed a unique cleaning system that allows the client to choose detail items that fits their needs, the MyFreedom Cleaning System. We stepped up our SEO game and got creative with our Facebook page and we added QR codes to the company vehicles.
All of this took what, in January of 2012, appeared to be our last year in business and turned it into our best year yet.
Of course, none of this alone is responsible for any success we had. Our clients are amazing and we added two employees who are fantastic to augment Melanie who will celebrate her second year with us this spring.
In a couple of weeks, we will celebrate our seventh anniversary. Here’s to hoping 2013 will be even better.
